Organizing for the new addition

When I arrived…...

When I arrived…...

I recently organized a shelving unit in a room for twin babies. A girl and a boy. They may have been the most precious tiny humans I’ve ever met! So much cooing and wiggling. I was basically a puddle at their feet.

On the flip side of their ability to instantly melt hearts, having twins also means twice the amount of stuff! It’s tough enough having twins, and now you have to keep all of their tiny things organized?! When I was organizing their room, I realized I was setting up a system that I’d love to share with you! No matter how many babies you’re having, these are a few simple steps to make things a MILLION times easier on yourself when organizing a baby’s room.

The first thing to do is make sure all of their creams, medicines, ointments, wipes, nose suckers and other assorted accoutrements are stored together in one place. A small bookshelf can serve as a great option for open shelving.

Next, measure the width and depth of the shelves. Pick some fun baskets that you’ll be able to fit several of on each shelf. Each basket will hold different categories of your baby’s items. The Container Store has lots of great options. Pro tip: I prefer to get a bunch of the same kind of basket so it looks polished and consistent. Almost like it was meant to be there the whoooole time ;)

Once you have your baskets, the next step is to sort your categories! Lay out all of your baby’s items. Make piles of all of the creams, medicines, tools, feeding supplies, etc. Put everything like-with-like. Each category gets its own basket.

After everything is sorted into baskets by category, label each basket. There are all kinds of label makers out there that can print really fun labels! Brother makes many great models. Pro tip: I love the Brother P-touch Cube pro. It has many different settings and tape options. On the flip side, if you don’t want to buy a label maker, you can write with a permanent marker on some scotch tape, or if its a basket you don’t mind writing on, write straight on the basket! All options are great and work equally. The most important thing, is that that basket gets labeled.

….and at the end of the day.

….and at the end of the day.

Now, the MOST IMPORTANT STEP to staying organized is the step that gets overlooked the most! Its actually what happens immediately AFTER the organizing is complete….. Any guesses?

Stick to it! Breaking the habit of putting things down any which where, and maintaining the discipline to put things back where you just decided they should go, is the hardest part. It sounds simple enough, right? But it truly is the key to keeping a space organized. Once you designate a home for that diaper cream, put it back where it goes. Every time. Every single time you use it, make it a habit to put it away. You’ll never loose anything again because you’ll always know where you put it last.

It really is that simple! I’ll admit, setting up the systems takes some time and effort. But I promise, once you create that system of organization, you’ll love it and never go back!
